Recreation Areas Around Birmingham

Birmingham is a city that offers many recreational opportunities in and around it, from parks and nature preserves to lakes and golf courses. Below are some of the best recreational areas to explore in and around Birmingham.

  1. Oak Mountain State Park

Oak Mountain State Park is located in Pelham, which is south of Birmingham. This park spans over 9,900 acres and has a variety of recreational activities for all ages. It includes over 50 miles of hiking and mountain biking trails, two fishing lakes, a golf course, a swimming beach and boat rentals, and more. If you love camping, this park has over 100 campsites for RVs and tent campsites too.

  1. Railroad Park

Railroad Park is one of the best recreational parks in downtown Birmingham. It’s a public park that offers a lot of entertainment with stunning views of the city. You can see different events throughout the year organized at this park, from live music concerts to food festivals. The park offers modern amenities like Wi-Fi, multiple vendor kiosks, outdoor televisions and plenty of benches and green space.

  1. Ruffner Mountain Nature Preserve

Located in east Birmingham, Ruffner Mountain Nature Preserve provides great hiking trails for outdoor enthusiasts. The preserve spans over 1,011 acres, containing over 14 miles of hiking trails. It also has a large educational center where visitors can learn about the wildlife that inhabits the area.

  1. Red Mountain Park

Red Mountain Park is a massive park area located in Birmingham’s western suburbs. It spans over 1,200 acres and offers more than 15 miles of hiking and mountain biking trails. Some of the park’s most popular features include the Adventure Area which offers zip-lining, slide rides and rope courses.

  1. Moss Rock Preserve

Moss Rock Preserve is another nature preserve located just outside Hoover’s residential neighborhoods south of Birmingham. The preserve spans over 250 acres and offers a variety of hiking trails. Along with the miles of scenic trails, visitors can explore unique rock formations that are over 60 million years old.

  1. Birmingham Botanical Gardens

Birmingham Botanical Gardens is a garden oasis located just a few minutes south of downtown Birmingham. This garden features over 7,000 plants from different regions around the world. Visitors can enjoy many self-guided tours and hikes through the extensive gardens. Between November to December, the gardens light up with a magical assortment of lights that delight visitors.

  1. Vulcan Park and Museum

The Vulcan Park and Museum is a very popular spot in Birmingham, which celebrates the history of the city through the use of the statue of the Roman god of fire, Vulcan. The park spans 10 acres, complete with walking trails and a museum that showcases the history of the city from the art district to industry, as well as Vulcan’s story.

  1. Sloss Furnaces National Historic Landmark

Sloss Furnaces is another unique and interesting historical landmark located in Birmingham. The furnaces have become a very popular destination for people interested in history, particularly metalworking or industrialization. The furnaces were in use for 90 years until they were turned into a museum in 1981. Visitors can explore all five blast furnaces that still stand, see how iron was produced with its many cooling fans, hear about steelworkers’ ingenuity during industrialization, and much more.

  1. Tannehill State Park

Located outside of Birmingham, Tannehill State Park is famous for its historic structures that help teach visitors about Alabama’s history like ranging from Civil War to post-Civil War era. There are also outdoor activities at Tannehill State Park, including fishing, hiking, camping, and picnicking.

  1. Barber Motorsports Park

Barber Motorsports Park is considered one of the best motor sports parks in the world. The park spans over 740 acres featuring a world-class race track and museum. The park includes numerous motor racing events throughout the year and considers home for Porsche racing school.

  1. Lakes

There are several lakes around Birmingham that offer great recreational options for nature lovers, adventure enthusiasts, and families. Some of these popular lakes include Lay Lake, Logan Martin Lake, Lake Martin, and Smith Lake. These lakes offer boating, fishing, camping, water sports, and other adventurous activities.

  1. Golf Courses

Birmingham is a golfer’s paradise with over 100 golf courses. Some of the best golf courses in Birmingham include Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail, Oxmoor Valley Golf Course, Ross Bridge Golf Resort, Highland Park Golf Course, and Riverchase Country Club.
